NES Health offers physicians a variety of exciting pathways for building their emergency medicine career. The integrated EM role is one of them, combining the duties of an emergency physician with those of a hospitalist to meet the cost and quality challenges faced by critical access hospitals.
In this unique hybrid position, you provide care for both emergency department patients as well as hospital inpatients. You may also oversee the care of patients admitted by local primary care providers (PCPs). This involves sharing reports and diagnoses with PCPs and consulting with them by phone, fax, or e-mail as needed to determine the most appropriate path of treatment.
Is Integrated Emergency Medicine Right for You?
As an integrated emergency medicine physician, your duties span the spectrum from ED visit to inpatient care to discharge. This position may be right for you if:
- You want to experience the rigors of an emergency medicine career as well as the rewards of a practice-based career, such as getting to know patients on an individual basis.
- You like the idea of taking a lead role in a patient’s continuum of care.
- You enjoy being involved with hospital committees and initiatives, such as improving patient safety.
- You want to be on the “front lines” of patient care, which necessitates constant communication with family members, hospital staff, and other providers.
- You are detailed-oriented and enjoy tasks such as tracking test results and creating and managing comprehensive care plans.
- You like the challenge of working with the more complex medical cases inherent in a hospital environment.
Working in an integrated emergency medicine role gives you the opportunity to wear the “hats” of both an EM physician and a hospitalist. With skyrocketing healthcare costs and greater demand for quality patient care, the outlook for this type of clinical position is very favorable.
